DURHAM, N.C. – Summit Design and Engineering Services, as the design and engineering consultant on Riverwalk (a recently opened collection of urban greenways along the historic Eno River in downtown Hillsborough, N.C.), won a Grand Award and the People’s Choice Award at last night’s ACEC/NC Engineering Excellence Awards Gala.
Bill Leslie, an Emmy Award winning journalist who has won more than 80 major news awards, referred to the ACEC Engineering Excellence Awards as the Academy Awards of engineering. This statewide competition evaluates a project based on a multitude of factors, including innovative approaches, future value to the engineering profession, complexity and exceeding client/owner needs.
Over 100 guests from eleven different firms throughout North Carolina and ACEC/NC board members attended this formal event at Bay 7 in Durham's American Tobacco Campus. Summit's President, Jim Parker, along with Town of Hillsborough representatives and Summit engineers who worked on Riverwalk, attended ACEC/NC's Engineering Excellence Awards Gala on Thursday, November 13, 2014 to receive the awards.
Thirteen projects were honored with awards, which included Honorable Mention, Grand Award and Grand Conceptor. Along with a Grand Award, Summit garnered the People's Choice Award which was voted on by all attendees during cocktail hour. The Grand Conceptor recipient, Mulkey Engineers & Consultants' Marisco Hall in Chapel Hill, will continue on to the national ACEC competition.
"Completing any project of this caliber means a lot to us, but completing one that's right in your backyard means that much more, said Parker as he accepted a Grand Award on behalf of Summit.
