HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. – Jim Parker, President of Summit Design and Engineering Services, and George Horton, of Tryon Investment Properties, have raised over $20,000 in just ten months for Education Foundation for Orange County Schools, a literacy program which was recently restarted.

The Education Foundation for Orange County Schools program includes a plan to secure additional literacy training and resources for Central Elementary, an Orange County school. This effort was named Leaders and Learners. To read the full press release and learn more about this program, please visit

After golfing with a Central Elementary physical education teacher and learning about the children’s needs, Parker and Horton helped create a way in which every Orange County school could receive supplemental funds from the business community.

“As a local professional, business person, developer, and resident, I believe, no I know, that our very best asset is our children and their individual education,” said Parker. “Life enriching opportunities go hand-in-hand with academic learning, and this program also reaches that need. It is with great enthusiasm that I am a part of this program and I thank all that have been involved. Literacy is the very cornerstone of knowledge and education.”

“There is a wide body of research that confirms literacy is critical to the success and welfare of our children and ultimately our citizens and their communities, and by supporting this initiative we are working to improve the quality of life in Orange County,” said Horton.

Orange County Schools is grateful to have people like Parker and Horton in the community so eager to help. “To have people of their influence bring us together to reach children in our public schools is an honor, and we will do what we can to be the best partners possible,” said Denis Morton, a school representative.

Efforts to raise money for the Education Foundation for Orange County Schools will continue. Feel free to contact Jim Parker at Summit to learn more about how you can help and get involved.
